Fine mist fogging of HOCL could be the answer to kill tiny coronavirus airborne particles that potentially linger in poorly ventilated indoor spaces for hours.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed in the latest revision of its guidelines that the particles play a role in the spread of the virus.

The update was issued only a few weeks after the agency initially acknowledged the threat of the virus being spread in that fashion, then removed the warning days later. At the time the CDC said that a draft version of proposed changes to the guidelines had been posted prematurely.

In the latest version the agency stated that the coronavirus “can sometimes be spread by airborne transmission”.

The term describes the process by which certain infections, such as tuberculosis, measles and chicken pox, are passed on by exposure to a virus “in small droplets and particles that can linger in the air for minutes to hours”.

According to the CDC there is now “evidence that under certain conditions, people with Covid-19 seem to have infected others who were more than 6ft away. These transmissions occurred within enclosed spaces that had inadequate ventilation.”

However, the agency emphasised that it “continues to believe, based on current science, that people are more likely to become infected the longer and closer they are to a person with Covid-19.”

The CDC said: “Today’s update acknowledges the existence of some published reports showing limited, uncommon circumstances where people with Covid-19 infected others who were more than 6ft away or shortly after the Covid-19-positive person left an area. In these instances transmission occurred in poorly ventilated and enclosed spaces that often involved activities that caused heavier breathing, like singing or exercise. Such environments and activities may contribute to the build-up of virus-carrying particles.”
